April is STD Awareness Month

The recent announcement made at the National STD Meeting that one in four American teenage girls has a sexually transmitted disease has led to unprecedented coverage of STDs in the media.

In order to take advantage of that heightened awareness, the STD Control Branch has assembled some inexpensive and easy ways to promote STD prevention messages.  All of these suggestions rely on electronic communication.  The media and messages are focused to reach out to youth and young adults.  Please review the list to find resources that are appropriate for your staff and your priority population.

Link to CDC’s STD Awareness Month site (www.cdcnpin.com/stdawareness/)
In particular, I’d like to draw your attention to the variety of e-cards with prevention messages tailored for different groups. Additionally, the CDC has now integrated STD testing sites into www.hivtest.org to allow searching by zip code for both HIV and STD tests.

Up-to-date data for statewide and local health jurisdictions (www.dhs.ca.gov/ps/dcdc/STD/stddatasummaries.htm)

Listen to Heidi Bauer, MD, MPH,MA for updated information on the HPV vaccine (www.dhs.ca.gov/ps/dcdc/izgroup/diseasesbrowse/hpv_for health_care.providers.htm)

Select free original promotional materials from the SWAP site; using key words, you can search for media and target populations (www.stdhivtraining.org/swap)

Social networking site opportunities on Facebook and MySpace:
Facebook (www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=13284762505)
MySpace (www.myspace.com/stdawareness1)

For easy access to these ideas and information link to www.stdhivtraining.org For more information about these and any other STD Awareness month activities, please contact Joyce Lisbin at joyce.lisbin@cdph.ca.gov or at (510)  625-6032.

Please forward the attached invitation for peer educators and those who work with youth to keep their friends healthy and STD-free (PDF, 26K).
