2nd National Summit on Preconception Health and Health Care

Colleagues:

The 2nd National Summit on Preconception Health and Health Care will be held in Oakland, California on Monday October 29 through Wednesday October 31, 2007, at the Oakland Marriott City Center, 1001 Broadway.  The Summit is being planned and hosted by the Preconception Care Council of California, March of Dimes California Chapter, and the California Department of Health Services, in collaboration with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA).  On-line registration and links to abstract submission are available on the Summit website.

This flyer also provides more information (PDF, 181K). Please note that the deadline for abstract and proposal submission is June 18, 2007, the deadline for early registration is September 15, 2007 and the deadline for all registration is October 15, 2007.

Opportunity: Farmers Emerging Scholars Program

Program Description

Farmers has created a scholarship program for deserving California resident students pursing any major and attending one of the 39 United Negro College Fund (UNCF) member institutions or other historically black colleges or universities (HBCUs). This new scholarship is designed to help ensure the continued success of five deserving students, while creating a way to ease the burden of costs associated with attending college.

Scholarship eligibility (students must meet all eligibility criteria for consideration)

  • Student must be a U.S. Citizen;
  • Student must be a permanent resident of CA;
  • Students must be enrolled full time in a UNCF member college/university, or other HBCU;
  • Students must be a rising sophomore, junior or graduating senior;
  • Students must have a minimum, cumulative GPA of at least 2.8;
  • Students must show related work experience (e.g. – part time employment, internship, etc.);
  • Students must be actively involved in at least one community service oriented organization;
  • Students must have demonstrated financial need, verified by the college financial aid office;
 

The scholarship amount for each of the selected award winners will be $7,500, based on eligibility criteria and evaluation of all application materials that are received prior to the deadline (August 6, 2007). Upon verification of award status, payments will be generated and forwarded to the award recipients’ respective institution for credit to their account for the applicable academic year.

Award winners will be notified approximately 2 weeks after the application acceptance deadline.

Award winners will be honored at an event with Farmers, Black Educational Events, and UNCF in Los Angeles during the weekend of September 7, 2007. Travel and accommodations will be provided for each winner and a guest to attend the event.

Required Documents

  • Submit the following documents along with the completed and signed on-line application:
  • An official college/university transcript;
  • A letter of recommendation from a non-relative who has known the student for over 4 years;
  • A letter of recommendation from the community service organization where you are active/volunteering;
  • A 500 word essay (see essay topic choices online);
