About 48% of likely California voters said they support an initiative on the state's Nov. 4 ballot that would require parental notification before minors could receive abortions, while 39% of likely voters said they oppose it, according to a Field Poll released earlier this week, the Contra Costa Times reports. The poll was conducted among 672 likely voters and had a margin of error of plus or minus 5.6 percentage points (Harmon, Contra Costa Times, 7/22).

On Tuesday, a three-judge panel of the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Richmond, Va., declared a Virginia law banning so-called "partial-birth" abortion unconstitutional, the Washington Post reports. BETHESDA, Md. -- Medical abortion does not lead to extra adverse effects on outcomes of a first subsequent pregnancy, compared with surgical abortion, found a nationwide Danish registry.
The registry revealed essentially no differences between the outcomes of subsequent pregnancies of 2,710 women who had first-trimester medical abortions and 9,104 who had surgical abortions.

A House appropriations subcommittee on Tuesday approved legislation that Rep. Nita Lowey (D-N.Y.) said would allow the federal government to give contraceptives but not money to international groups that have been barred from receiving U.S. aid due to their abortion policies, the AP/San Diego Union-Tribune reports (Abrams, AP/San Diego Union-Tribune, 6/5).

BOSTON, April 23 -- Neither abortion nor miscarriage contributes to breast cancer risk, according to a prospective observational study of more than 100,000 women.
In the Nurses' Health Study II, premenopausal women were not at an elevated breast cancer risk after induced (hazard ratio 1.01, 95% confidence interval 0.88 to 1.17) or spontaneous abortion (HR 0.89, 95% CI 0.78 to 1.01) found Karin B. Michels, Sc.D., Ph.D., of Brigham and Women's Hospital here, and colleagues.
