Free online tool guides teens through decision-making process of reproductive planning.
Preconception health is very important for all women of childbearing years. A growing body of evidence shows that many important determinants of birth outcomes exist before pregnancy even occurs. Among teens, 82% of pregnancies are unplanned.
CFHC has developed a section within its popular website for teens, TeenSource.org, to highlight preconception health and to help them find the reproductive information and healthcare they need. Teens already have access to high quality information through CFHC’s youth sexual health website. Building on this foundation, a new section was developed entitled “My Health, My Future, My Plan.”
This new section will allow teens to take a self-guided tour through the concepts that will help them plan whether and when they might have kids, and will help them know how to keep healthy whether or not they plan to have a baby in the future.
“My Health, My Future, My Plan” includes thought-provoking discussions regarding:
Your dreams and goals for the future
Keeping healthy for yourself and your future
Choosing a birth control method that will really work for you
Talking to partners about birth control
Planning for your work and education
The Reproductive Life Plan guides teens through these concepts, leading them to the final step of making an action plan. It then offers a number of suggestions for making their plan come to life, including:
Talk to my girlfriend about my using a condom along with her birth control method.
Call the Quit Smoking hotline tomorrow to find out how to get started.
Talk to my school counselor about community college.
“‘My Health, My Future, My Plan’ can reach more young people in a venue that is familiar to them,” states Kate Jerman, coordinator for TeenSource, “And perhaps it can reach youth who otherwise would not be thinking about these questions. It also encourages youth to get the help they need in one of our Title X clinic settings.”
